Large workplaces usually have an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) or occupational health and safety program (OHSP) based on standards such as OHSAS 18001:1999 or CSA Z1000-14. These programs help a workplace manage health and safety risks from hazards within a workplace using a coordinated and comprehensive approach.
When addressing sun safety as a workplace hazard, our Model Sun Safety Program is designed to be one program of the workplace’s OHSMS.
Our Model Sun Safety Program aligns with the elements of an OHSMS/OHSP and is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act model for improvement. For some elements, there are specific sun safety activities that can be implemented (for example, sun safety policy, risk assessment, control measures, training and education). For these elements, we provide resources to help workplaces implement sun safety activities. For other elements, consideration of the sun safety should be embedded within existing workplace practices (for example, return-to-work, preventive maintenance, procurement).
